The case against Telegram founder Pavel Durov in France will not be sent to court for at least another year, Wired reports, citing local prosecutors.

According to the office’s spokesperson, Maïlys de Rec, it is too early to discuss any potential settlement between the authorities and the businessman.

The messenger first drew law enforcement attention in early 2024 when it refused to disclose the identity of a user suspected of child sexual abuse. In March, France issued an arrest warrant for Durov and his brother, Nikolai.

Later, France’s specialized cybercrime unit, known as J3, joined the investigation into Telegram.

Following Telegram’s changes in its data disclosure policies, authorities in several countries noted improved cooperation with the platform. Law enforcement officials stated that the messenger’s compliance with metadata requests has been helpful in numerous investigations, particularly in drug trafficking cases.

“[Telegram representatives] not only remove flagged content but also provide us with compliance updates, usually within 24 hours,” said Soeun Park, a member of South Korea’s Independent Media Commission.

According to the report, while Durov remains “stuck” in France, Telegram investors are increasingly concerned about the company’s long-term future, and the platform’s team remains uncertain about whether the situation will necessitate a leadership change.

The Telegram founder was detained at Paris’ Le Bourget airport on the evening of August 24, 2024.

Investigators charged him with several crimes related to organized crime, including complicity in drug distribution, child pornography, and refusal to provide requested information to authorities.

Five days later, Durov was released on €5 million bail, with the condition that he report to a police station twice a week. He is also prohibited from leaving France.

Durov denies all charges against him.

In December, he was questioned about the case for the first time, but details of the interrogation remain undisclosed.

Shortly after his arrest, Durov announced stricter content moderation policies for Telegram. Around the same time, the platform began processing and responding to legal requests from European authorities more promptly.

Public statistics on government requests for user data disclosure have since been made available.
