The launch of Belarus’ first nuclear power plant has led to the development of favorable electricity tariffs, contributing to the growth of the mining industry. This was stated by Denis Moroz, the Deputy Minister of Energy of Belarus, as reported by Russian Gazette.
He explained that companies engaged in cryptocurrency mining, as well as large data centers, benefit from discounts based on their energy consumption.
“The tariffs are differentiated: the more energy a company consumes, the cheaper the electricity becomes for them. We are observing interest from various companies in these tariffs. Currently, there are mining companies in the country involved in cryptocurrency production,” said the Deputy Minister.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant was brought into commercial operation between 2021 and 2023.
If electricity demand continues to rise in 2025, Belarusian authorities will assess the need for a new facility.
It should be noted that in 2017, Belarus signed a decree legalizing mining activities.
In 2019, President Alexander Lukashenko proposed building a large data center for mining near the Belarusian nuclear power plant.
In February 2021, the Ministry of Energy of Belarus announced the exploration of the prospects for cryptocurrency mining.
