A hacking group with “clear ties” to China, identified as SweetSpecter, attempted a phishing attack on OpenAI employees, according to a report by Bloomberg citing OpenAI’s statement.

SweetSpecter impersonated a ChatGPT user and sent phishing emails to OpenAI’s support team. These emails contained malicious attachments designed to grant hackers access to OpenAI systems, allowing them to capture screenshots and extract data.
This incident occurred earlier this year but was unsuccessful, as OpenAI emphasized.
“OpenAI’s security team contacted employees potentially targeted by this phishing campaign and found that existing safeguards prevented the emails from reaching their corporate inboxes,” the company stated.
