Federal Judge Catherine Polk Failla from the Southern District of New York has postponed the trial of Roman Storm, one of the founders of the cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash, to April 14, 2025. This was reported by CoinDesk.
The scheduled hearing on November 12 will focus on the disclosure of information regarding expert witnesses, providing the parties four months to discuss contentious issues.
Storm’s attorneys from Waymaker LLP refused to comply with Judge Failla’s October 14 order to exchange witness information with the prosecution, considering it a biased move that could hinder their strategy.
In August 2022, the OFAC added Tornado Cash to its sanctions list, claiming that the platform had laundered over $7 billion in cryptocurrency, including $455 million linked to the activities of North Korean hacker group Lazarus Group.
In the same month, Alexey Percev, another developer of the mixer, was arrested in the Netherlands. Later, in May 2024, he was convicted of laundering $1.2 billion and sentenced to 64 months in prison. A court in July denied him bail pending the appeal.
Roman Storm and his colleague, Roman Semenov, have also been charged with money laundering and violating sanctions in the U.S. Storm was released on bail but has not pleaded guilty. In September, the court denied his motion to dismiss the case. Semenov, who is free, has been sanctioned.
