Nicolas Cage has called on young actors to resist pressure from studios and stand against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and Emotional Behavior Digital Rendering (EBDR) technology to manipulate their performances. He made this statement on stage at the 25th Newport Beach Film Festival, according to Deadline.
“This technology wants to take your instrument away,” the actor emphasized.
EBDR allows for the creation of a digital copy of an actor. A notable example is the “de-aging” of Harrison Ford in the movie Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023).
“Studios can alter an actor’s face, voice, dialogue, and even body after filming,” Cage noted.
He also expressed dissatisfaction with his appearance as Superman in The Flash (2023), stating that it did not reflect his actual performance.
“Nothing could be more inhuman than AI,” he declared.
Cage urged young actors to defend their craft and demand that studios preserve their original performances without alterations.
Concerns Over AI in Hollywood
In July 2023, Cage voiced his concerns about the growing use of AI in Hollywood. That same month, video game actors and motion capture specialists began striking over the threat AI poses to their rights.
