US President Donald Trump has nominated Jonathan Gould for the position of Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) at the US Treasury. Gould previously served as the agency’s chief counsel and as CLO at Bitfury, reports The Block.
According to Ron Hammond of the Blockchain Association, if confirmed, Gould’s appointment could facilitate the development of a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies.
“His experience ensures that the OCC will have every opportunity for constructive engagement with Congress as it considers the stablecoin payments bill and the Financial Innovation and Technology Act,” Hammond said.
In this regard, Gould could follow in the footsteps of Brian Brooks, who had authorized financial institutions to provide crypto custody services, hold stablecoin reserves, and issue stablecoins, Hammond noted.
Brooks’ successor, Michael Hsu, took a less crypto-friendly stance on digital assets.
The OCC oversees and regulates banks and savings associations at the federal level.
According to WSJ, Trump plans to merge the FDIC with the OCC. Meanwhile, Russell Vought, the acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), has ordered the suspension of all enforcement actions.
Trump has also nominated Jonathan McKernan to lead the CFPB. McKernan previously advised former Senator Pat Toomey and served as senior policy advisor at the Treasury Department.
In June 2024, Coinbase sued the SEC and FDIC, accusing them of attempting to cut off the crypto industry from the banking sector. In January, lawyers from History Associates accused the FDIC of withholding requested documents.
Earlier, Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis threatened the FDIC with criminal charges if the agency was indeed destroying records related to crypto oversight.
In December, Trump officially nominated Paul Atkins as SEC Chairman, highlighting his expertise in digital assets.
