Google Adds AI Mode to Search

Google is launching AI Mode, a new experimental feature in its search engine designed to compete with Perplexity AI and ChatGPT Search by OpenAI.

AI Mode allows users to ask complex questions for in-depth topic exploration directly in Google Search. In the coming days, it will become available to Google One AI Premium subscribers through Labs.

The new mode is powered by Gemini 2.0 AI model and offers advanced reasoning capabilities along with multimodal features.

AI Mode processes multiple related queries from various sources, structuring them into a single, comprehensive answer.

For example, if a user wants to compare a smart ring, a smartwatch, and a sleep-tracking mat, AI Mode will provide a detailed comparison of their features with source links. Users can then ask follow-up or additional questions.

Google explains: “You can ask nuanced questions that previously required multiple searches, such as exploring a new concept or comparing detailed options, and receive a helpful AI-powered response with links for further information.”

In May 2024, Google integrated generative AI into Search. One of the key features is AI-generated overviews, where the neural network gathers and summarizes information based on user queries.

In February 2025, Google updated its Gemini chatbot app, introducing widgets for the lock screen and iPhone Control Center.
