El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele is planning a visit to Russia in 2025, with cryptocurrencies expected to be one of the key topics of discussion, CCN reports, citing sources.
According to the publication, the talks are in their early stages, and the outcome will depend on the U.S. stance toward Russia following Donald Trump’s inauguration. Although El Salvador has not joined Western sanctions against Russia, the broader geopolitical climate could influence the upcoming visit.
One of the anticipated discussion points is Bitcoin. As the first country to recognize Bitcoin as legal tender, El Salvador might propose collaboration with Russia, which recently approved the use of digital assets for cross-border payments.
The two nations are also expected to explore potential cooperation in infrastructure and nuclear energy.
Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin described the cryptocurrency market as a “very dynamic and promising area of the modern economy.”
Previously, El Salvador expanded its Bitcoin purchases despite agreements with the IMF.
