OpenAI has officially launched Sora, a new tool that allows users to create videos from text prompts, animate images, extend existing footage, and fill in missing frames.

Initially unveiled in February, Sora was previously available to a limited audience. Now, the tool is accessible to users in the United States and most other countries with Pro and Plus subscriptions.
The exact timeline for its availability in Europe, the UK, and some other regions remains unspecified.
The current version, Sora Turbo, can generate video clips ranging from 5 to 20 seconds in various resolutions.
During a live YouTube session, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman showcased the Blend feature, which merges two scenes into one seamless video.
“This is an early version of Sora. It’s not perfect and makes mistakes, but we believe it has reached a point where it’s genuinely useful for enhancing human creativity,” said Will Peebles, a technical expert at OpenAI.
Subscription and Credit System
Access to Sora is credit-based, with usage costs determined by video resolution and length. The Plus and Pro subscriptions provide 1,000 and 10,000 credits per month, respectively. For example:
- 480p videos require 20–150 credits.
- 1080p videos use 100–2,000 credits.
Unused credits do not roll over; they are reset monthly.
Sora credits vary by resolution and duration, with ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans providing 1,000 and 10,000 credits respectively, resetting monthly without rollover

Controversy and Competition
In November, some testers reportedly uploaded the yet-unreleased Sora tool to Hugging Face in protest.
Meanwhile, in August, Alibaba revealed its work on Tora, a video generation tool inspired by OpenAI’s technology.
