Under the agreement, up to 15,000 scientists will gain access to OpenAI’s o1 model, which specializes in reasoning-based tasks. Additionally, OpenAI will collaborate with Microsoft to deploy one of its models on Venado, a Los Alamos National Laboratory supercomputer designed for AI and high-performance computing applications.
As part of the partnership, researchers will leverage OpenAI’s technologies to:
- Enhance cybersecurity within the U.S. energy grid
- Develop new treatments and disease prevention strategies
- Advance fundamental mathematics and physics research
Regarding nuclear security, OpenAI emphasized that its AI will be used to “reduce the risk of nuclear war and ensure the safety of nuclear materials and weapons worldwide.”
In July 2024, OpenAI first announced its collaboration with the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the birthplace of the atomic bomb.
