Meta has made its Llama large language models available to over ten U.S. government agencies and defense contractors, including Lockheed Martin Corp., Booz Allen Hamilton Holding Corp., and Palantir Technologies Inc.

Policy Exception for U.S. and Allies

While Meta’s policy generally prohibits the use of its AI technologies in military projects, an exception has been made for U.S. agencies and their allies.

“As an American company, proud of its entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to U.S. democratic values, Meta aims to contribute to the safety, security, and prosperity of America and its closest allies,” the company stated.

International Access

In addition to the U.S., governmental agencies in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have been granted access to Llama. These nations are required to use the AI in accordance with international law and ethical standards.

Strategic Context

Meta acknowledged the intensifying competition from China and other nations striving for leadership in AI and security technologies. This access reflects Meta’s broader strategic alignment with democratic countries.

Earlier Incidents

Previously, some institutions in China adapted Meta’s open AI model to develop potential military applications.
