SEC to Review Listing Applications for Three Ethereum ETF Options

CBOE has submitted a listing application to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for options on three spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) based on Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.

These include:

  • Grayscale Ethereum Trust ETF;
  • Grayscale Ethereum Mini Trust ETF;
  • Bitwise Ethereum ETF.

The SEC has requested public comments on the proposal, and the comment period will last for 21 days after the document is published in the Federal Register.

In August 2024, the New York Stock Exchange filed a proposal with the SEC to change rules allowing it to list and provide trading options for spot Ethereum ETFs from Bitwise and Grayscale.

In November, the regulator postponed consideration of the application.

In January 2025, CBOE, on behalf of ARK Invest and 21Shares, submitted a request to change the structure of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs to allow asset buybacks in physical form.

Prior to this, ConsenSys founder Joe Lubin hinted at the “imminent” approval of staking for ETH-ETFs.

Earlier, options trading for the spot BTC-ETF from BlackRock (IBIT) launched on Nasdaq.

In less than two months, open interest in IBIT derivatives reached half of the figure on Deribit.

It is worth noting that in January, Nasdaq, on behalf of BlackRock, filed a request to change the structure of the instrument to allow asset buybacks in physical form.
